Are background extras so important in a movie?

Yes, extras are very very important to build the narrative in a scene, and a genius director can make the character speak through the extras, while the main actor in focus can remain silent.

Take a look at this picture from The Shawshank Redemption (1994) – IMDb,a perfect and mind-blowing use of extras.

Brooks just got out of prison after many many years. He is feeling so lonely and terrified. The emotion gets pumped to our subconscious as all the extras in the bus look away from Brooks, they all look sideways, making him look even lonelier than usual.

A good director uses the extras to provoke some emotion inside us, and not just use them to make the scene be more realistic and beautiful.

ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಅರಿಕೆ – 15ನೇ ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ 2020

ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ,

ಕೆಲ ಕ್ಷುಲ್ಲಕ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಂದಾಗಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪಕಾಲ ಫೇಸ್ಬುಕ್ಕಿನಿಂದ ಹೊರಬಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಕೆಲದಿನಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ನನ್ನ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಕೆಲ ಏಕದೇವೋಪಾಸಕರ ಯಥಾಪ್ರಕಾರದ ಅನ್ಯಧರ್ಮದ್ವೇಷದ ಪೋಸ್ಟುಗಳನ್ನು ನೀವು ನೋಡಿರಬಹುದು. ಅವರ ಈ ಕೆಲಸಗಳು ಹೊಸದೇನೂ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಕಾಣದಿರುವ ಧರ್ಮದ್ವೇಷ, ಈ ಏಕದೇವೋಪಾಸಕರಿಗೆ ಕಂಡುಬರುತ್ತಪ್ಪ. ಅದ್ಯಾವನೋ ಕಾರ್ಟೂನಿಷ್ಟ್ ಕೃಷ್ಣಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ ಬೈದದ್ದೂ, ಇವರಿಗೆ ಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೇ ಬೈದಂತೆ ಅನಿಸಿದರೆ ಅದ್ಯಾರ ತಪ್ಪು ಮಾರಾಯ್ರೆ! ದೇವರ ಹೆಸರನ್ನೇ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೋ ಅಂತಾ ಹೇಳಿದವರ್ಯಾರು ಈ ಕೃಷ್ಣಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ? ಒಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಮುಟ್ಟಿದರೆ ಮುನಿಗಳಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಫೇಸ್ಬುಕ್ ಪೋಸ್ಟುಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಕಷ್ಟವಂತೆ. ಅದೂ ಇವರ ವರಸೆಯೆಂತದ್ದು! ಯಾರಿಗೂ ತಾರ್ಕಿಕವಾಗಿ ಮಾತಾಡುವ ಕ್ಷಮತೆಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಬಾಯಿತೆಗೆದರೆ ಸೀದಾ ಕತ್ತುಕುಯ್ಯುವ ಮಾತೇ ಮಾರಾಯ್ರೆ!!

ಇನ್ನೂ ಮಜವೆಂದರೆ ಕೆಲವರು ಬಂದು ಕ್ಷಮೆ ಕೇಳು ಎಂದರು. ಆದರೆ ಯಾರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂತಾ ಕ್ಷಮೆ ಕೇಳುವುದು? ಇವರನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಗುತ್ತಿಗೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿರುವವರು ಯಾರು? ನಿಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ಷಮೆ ಕೇಳಲೇ ಎಂದರೆ, ನನ್ನನ್ನಲ್ಲ ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನೂ ಕೇಳು ಅಂತಾರೆ. ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಸಹ ನಾನು ಯಾರಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ಷಮೆ ಕೇಳಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟತೆಯಿಲ್ಲ. ಯಾಕೆ ಕೇಳಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟತೆಯಂತೂ ಮೊದಲೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಹೇಗೆ ಕೇಳಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದು ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಪೋಲೀಸರಿಗೆ ಹಿಡಿದುಕೊಡಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಉಮೇದಿದೆ. ಹೇಗೆ ಹಿಡುದುಕೊಡುತ್ತೀರಿ, ನನ್ನ ಮೇಲೆ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಬಳಿ ಏನು ಆರೋಪವಿದೆ, ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯಿದೆ ಅಂತಾ ಕೇಳಿದರೆ ಅದ್ಯಾವುದೋ ಹಳೆಯ ಒಂದೆರಡು ಸ್ಕ್ರೀನ್ಶಾಟುಗಳನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದುಕೊಂಡು ಒಂದೇಸಮನೆ ಅಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಅದಕ್ಕೇ ಅವರ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ಕಡಿಮೆಮಾಡಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಸಧ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಫೇಸ್ಬುಕ್ಕನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಗಿತಗೊಳಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಪಾಪ ಯಾಕೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತವರ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಕಷ್ಟ!

ನಿಮ್ಮೆಲ್ಲರ ಹಾರೈಕೆಯಿಂದ ನಾನು ಕ್ಷೇಮವಾಗಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಯಾವ ಗಾಬರಿಯೂ ಬೇಡ. ನಮ್ಮ ಮಾತುಕಥೆ ಇಲ್ಲೇ ಈ ಬ್ಲಾಗಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯಲಿ.

From Raghavendra’s Dhaba – Chicken Gravy

Tired of sitting at home and in mood to cook something new? Here is a quick recipe for something that can go both with Roti or Rice.

Ingredients:

Chicken – 300 Gms

Curd – 3 Tablespoons

Cashews – 6 to 8

Onion – 1 (medium sized)

Tomato – 1 (medium sized)

Garlic – 5 buds

Ginger – 2 inch

Cumin powder, Coriander Powder, Garam Masala, , Turmeric – 1 Teaspoon each

Milk – 1/4 cup

1 Bay leaf, 5 cloves and 2 inch cinnamon stick

Red Chili Powder and Salt – As per your taste

Oil/Ghee – 2 Tablespoon

Preparation:

Marinate the Chicken in curd, a pinch each of salt, turmeric and chili powder. Longer the marination the better. Also soak the cashews in milk.

In a pan, heat 1 tablespoon of ghee and fry the chopped onion and tomato, crushed garlic buds and chopped ginger. Let it cool down. Once it is cooler, grind it with soaked cashews. Instead of using water for grinding, make use of the cashew soaked milk. Make a fine paste.

Once again, heat a spoon of oil. Activate a couple of bay-leaf, cloves and cinnamon. Add the finely ground the masala, a teaspoon each of cumin powder and coriander powder and half teaspoon of garam masala powder. Depending on your taste add 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of red chili powder. Mix well and cook until the raw smell is gone. When the masala starts to leave the edges, add the marinated chicken. Mix well. Cook on medium-low flame for 20 minutes, or until done.

Enjoy the thick gravy with Chapati, Roti or Rice, with a wedge of lemon by the side.

P.S: You can use the same recipe for a veg preparation. Replace chicken with baby potatoes/cube cut potatoes, paneer and green-peas (Yes, I would still recommend marination)
